Recording is afoot but in uneven spurts. Many instances of n steps forward and m steps back.
“Async” feels closer to completion but once every few days, I wake up to find its animating spirit gone. I have to tweak something to summon it back. It’s all very strange.
Two weeks ago, while waiting for a flight at La Guardia airport, I spent an afternoon distorting and gating reverb to create an extremely chalky but reluctant wall of noise. I know it exists in the same universe as “Second Chances” but getting everything to fit will be an interesting puzzle. I haven’t gotten around to it just yet.
”Doomscroll” is inching further along. I’m happy with the vocal harmonies, and need to find a day when I’m in the right headspace to bang out all the vocal takes. It’s a bit like waiting for the weather to clear up before launching a satellite into space; an astounding number of things need to line up and you’re in control of almost nothing. It could also all go wrong. You’d need your coping strategies lined up just in case.
Meanwhile, I spent a weekend at a self-directed research retreat focusing on getting the lyrics right for “Uncanny Valley”. It’s still a mountain of nonsense, but I see the song emerging from it. We’re close. It’s funny how some words in a wall of text can percolate meaning into everything else around them.
